I'm at the beginning of a new phase in life and planning to launch a flower farm near Glasgow.
The idea initially came about just over a year ago when I was thinking of different jobs I'd be good at. Floristry was something I investigated, and during that research I found out about flower farms. Although I visited Keukenhof about 20 years ago, I didn't realise that such things as flower farms existed, and it opened up a whole new world for me. I've always loved plants and gardening, growing things from seed and when I was in my late teens/early 20s I loved the idea of a smallholding, and have continued to love that idea since. I've kept Netherland Dwarf rabbits for 30 years and a flower farm feels so complimentary to animal husbandry that the whole concept makes real sense to me.
So far, I've worked on the first draft of the business model, I've made successful enquiries into business support from a few organisations and have my first webinar and meeting in the early part of this coming week; and I'm recording the journey here.
I've been considering what to name the flower farm, and had a few in mind. A week ago I loved the idea of 'Folklore' as it sounds mystical and rustic. I'd also thought about DoubleB, as the plan is to use compost from rabbit waste to fertilise the flowers and produce lots of blooms to attract pollinators, particularly bees, and produce honey and beeswax. So, DoubleB stands for bunnies and bees. Then, during this week The Prodigy's Wild Frontier track played on my mp3 player, and I like Adam Ant's Kings Of The Wild Frontier. I love the lyrics of both songs.
"In the wild frontier, off the beaten track
In the wild frontier, better watch your back
Where your dreams get real or your blood gets spilled
Gotta face your fears in the wild frontier" (Prodigy).
"A new Royal Family,
A wild nobility...
Just pride about our manner
Ant people are the warriors" (Adam Ant)
From a Google search of the term wild frontier, the AI response gave me: "wild frontier" refers to an untamed or undeveloped geographic region at the edge of settled civilization. Historically, it evokes the concept of the American Old West or uncharted wilderness, symbolizing adventure, lawlessness, and the line between established society and the unknown.
Metaphorical & Modern Meaning:
Untapped Potential: Figuratively, it refers to any new, unexplored area of study, technology, or business—often described as "pushing the frontiers of knowledge".
The Call of Nature: In modern culture, escaping to "the wild frontier" represents a desire for freedom, a simpler life away from modern urbanization, and a connection with raw, unspoiled nature.
This sounds perfect! References to uncharted wilderness, adventure, lawlessness, and established society and the potential of unknown reflect my ideals, and post punk music influences give layers of meaning for me.
I'm learning the art of floral display by doing flower arrangements and doing an online course in floristry. I entered my first floral art show at the Drymen Agri Show at the end of May, and got placed 3rd and also got a commended card, which was cool for my first ever show, and a complete novice!
